Zero-Waste Football Camp

Play Fresh Inc. hosts an annual 1-day football camp for rising 6th to 8th-grade student-athletes in the Carolinas. Transportation is provided for those who are in need, and carpooling is encouraged to reduce carbon emissions. The camp staff includes NFL players, high school coaches, and former collegiate athletes. It focuses on skill development and the basics of recycling, sustainability, and compost/waste.

All materials used and disposed of at the camp are reusable, recyclable, or compostable, including the apparel. Play Fresh supplies the student-athletes with BPA-free water bottles during training as well. Local teachers and professors give interactive presentations to the camp participants to help educate them on the framework of environmental sustainability.

In the summer of 2019, Play Fresh hosted its inaugural North Carolina football camp at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC. Approximately 50 middle-school student-athletes from Cleveland County attended the camp free of charge. The camp was led by 20 Gardner-Webb alumni, and roughly 10 gallons of compost material was collected at the conclusion of the event by The Compost Collective at Holly Oak Park.
